New Bookmobile

 Our New Bookmobile!

Traveling Library BookmobilesFor over 75 years, the Columbia County Traveling Library has served rural residents of Columbia County. Once in a generation, we have replaced the bookmobile. Now it is our  turn…

Old Bookmobile

The current bookmobile has served us well for more than 20 years, but it was off the road for more than one month in 2016 because of costly repairs. It desperately needed to be replaced right away. The Columbia County Commissioners included the library in a county fleet agreement with Enterprise and a new bookmobile was ordered in June 2016.

New Bookmobile in GarageThe new bookmobile is a custom-built 2016 Freightliner MT-55 step van, about the same size as the old bookmobile. It is fully customized and will function as a mobile classroom and storymobile with benches all the way around and a flip-down computer monitor. We will own the new bookmobile after making five years of payments, and expect to use it for 15 or more years.

Joan GrimordNew technology allows us to apply a vinyl wrap to the exterior of the bookmobile. Local artist, Joan Grimord, won a design contest. Joan is from Mount Pleasant Township and has written and illustrated children’s books (as Joan Gallup). The design shows a “community of readers” enjoying books as part of life in Columbia County. This work of public art will be more inviting and inspire delight in readers of all ages!

We have raised more than $160,000 toward our goal of $280,000 to pay off our lease payments and other expenses over the next five years. Once everything is paid off, we will own the vehicle!

So far, community members have contributed or pledged more than $20,000 toward our goal of $50,000 from individuals.  This is amazing! Donations have ranged from $10 to $1000 — many are pledging $25, $50, or $100 per year for the next five years. Board members have pledged over $7000, and many community members have made significant contributions because of what the bookmobile means to them and their neighbors.
