About Us
History:
The Columbia County Traveling Library was founded in 1941, through the
combined efforts of the Bloomsburg Public Library, county school officials, and
the Columbia County Commissioners. The Bloomsburg Public Library was asked to
administer and house the bookmobile and its collection, and the county provided
financial support via an annual appropriation. The first bookmobile arrived July
21, 1941, made its debut at the Benton farmer’s picnic, and began a schedule of
stops to country schools and communities under the direction of the first
librarian, Ruth Beers. The Traveling Library has operated a program of outreach
service continuously ever since its inception.
In 1988 a separate board of directors was established to comply with state
requirements. In 1997, the library was organized as a county authority, and
moved from the Bloomsburg Public Library to the county office building at 15
Perry Avenue, Bloomsburg.
Board of Directors:
Board members serve for a 3 year term, represent most geographic areas of
Columbia County, and are appointed by the Columbia County Commissioners.
